Her Excellency Sylvie Bermann the French Ambassador with Bishop RachelThe Bishop of Gloucester, the Rt Revd Rachel Treweek met Her Excellency, Sylvie Bermann, the French Ambassador at the French Embassy this week.

It was a chance for these two high profile women to have a conversation about some of their priorities and hopes for their roles.

Bishop Rachel said, “It was a privilege to be invited to the French Embassy and to meet with Her Excellency, Sylvie Bermann, the French Ambassador. In our conversation we reflected on what it means to live with difference, particularly regarding those of different faiths. We talked about how women in leadership can use their voices to both encourage other women and also to challenge inequality and discrimination.  I was delighted that we even managed to briefly comment on the inspirational work of Jean Vanier and the L’Arche communities.”

The French Ambassador said, “It was an honour for me to meet the Lord Bishop of Gloucester, the Rt Revd Rachel Treweek. I was particularly keen to discuss the issue of equality and – since Bishop Rachel is the first female bishop in the House of Lords – the topic of parity in politics. We touched on a number of topics including poverty, the fight against extremism, and migration”.

Following the meeting with the Ambassador, Bishop Rachel took a trip to Buckingham Palace to attend a garden party.
