St Luke’s is an evangelical Anglican church in the town of Cheltenham. We are a small but growing congregation of around 70 adults and 15 under 16s. We are a local church, passionate about mission to our local area, and growing deeper as disciples of Jesus Christ. On the surface we look relatively traditional, but we are always open to trying new things. Over the last year the Lord has blessed us through growth in numbers and is developing a vision for us to be deeply rooted in Jesus Christ and working in His strength that God’s kingdom might be built up in Cheltenham. We are a relaxed and loving church family, faithful in prayer and to the gospel, but without the structures of a larger church. Not everything runs smoothly and according to plan, but we believe and trust in the Lord’s sovereignty, not our own strength. We believe it is an exciting time to be part of St Luke’s and would love you to come and join us.
We have positions for up to 4 interns for the academic year 2017-18. As with many internship schemes the year will provide a combination of Biblical training, ministry experience and practical service. We are simply looking for young people eager to grow in their faith and develop their skills in order to prepare them for a lifetime of Christian discipleship. Our intention is to provide as much flexibility as possible to tailor each internship around the passions of the individual. At times we will seek to push you out of your comfort zone, but safe in the knowledge that things can and do go wrong. The church family will always be there to offer love, encouragement and support.
The details below give you an outline of what your internship might involve.
Our website will give you a flavour of life at St Luke’s:

One day per week will be devoted to Biblical study. This will be through a combination of online independent study courses and input from the church team.
St Luke’s will provide opportunities for you to develop your Bible teaching skills through working with our children and young people, leading small group Bible studies, and preaching where appropriate. At every stage you will be provided with support and feedback.
We will also seek to provide opportunities for further training through residential conferences. This year our interns are attending the Word Alive conference in North Wales. Each intern is also provided with a personal mentor with whom they meet regularly to pray, discuss and chat things through with.
Ministry Experience and Support
Interns will be given experience in a wide variety of areas of Christian ministry. This will be worked out in discussion with the individual, but previous interns have been involved in some of the areas below:
Children & Youth ministry
Student work amongst University of Gloucestershire Cheltenham campuses
Schools work at our church primary school, St John’s.
Community service such as Cheltenham Street Pastors, Cheltenham YMCA or Cheltenham Open Doors (a local homeless charity)
Pastoral visiting of elderly congregation members
St Luke’s is at the stage of seeking to develop a number of new ministries, notably in establishing a community of disciples meeting at St John’s, working in partnership with the YMCA to provide Christian input to support their sports ministry in the town, developing gospel ministry amongst the elderly, and exploring connections with Cheltenham Hospital. There would be opportunities for interns to be involved in such new initiatives. You would always be supported in any such ventures.
St Luke’s has no paid staff and so interns serve alongside the church family in helping out with the smooth running of the church. This might include producing the weekly Newsheet, developing our use of social media, and assisting with running of the church building and hall. Everybody at the church joins in and does what needs doing. Interns would play a role in this. The church still has pews so the good news is that there are no chairs to move!
Finance & Accommodation
St Luke’s will cover all training costs relating to the internship scheme. You will be provided with accommodation, either in a local property which the church has use of, or at the YMCA in the centre of town. Utility costs will be met, and you will be provided with a modest living allowance of £180 per month.
Previous interns have come to us because they were exploring Christian ministry, wanting to serve the church for a year, or simply as a gap year before, or after, university. They have gone on to explore full-time paid Christian work, further study, or as disciples in secular jobs. Our prayer and delight at St Luke’s is that we might see young people mature in Jesus Christ and go on to wherever He leads, for the glory of God.
