Gloucester Choral Society Concert

Venue: Gloucester Cathedral

The programme consists of Mendelssohn's Hymn of Praise and Hear My Prayer, with Haydn's Te Deum.

Conducted by Adrian Partington with the Emerald Ensemble.

Soloists are Kate Valentine Soprano, Alex Cassidy Mezzo and Jonathan Stoughton Tenor.

Mendelssohn like Mozart was a child prodigy and died young, worn out, it is said, by hard work.

For his anniversary the Gloucester Choral Society could have offered one of his better known pieces such as Elijah or Saint Paul. Instead they will be performing a less well known but magnificent and uplifting work, "Lobgesang" or Hymn of Praise, which is also known as Mendelssohn's Second Symphony.

As a prelude the GCS will perform two exquisite miniatures. Haydn's Te Deum in C is, like the composer, cheerful, generous, positive and energetic and a tonic for the listener.

Mendelssohn's Hear my Prayer, by contrast, is one of the most famous pieces of choral music ever written and is said to have been one of Queen Victoria's favourites.
