The Queen has approved the nomination of the Right Reverend Martyn James Snow, BSc, BTh, MA Suffragan Bishop of Tewkesbury, in the diocese of Gloucester, for election as Bishop of Leicester in succession to the Right Reverend Timothy John Stevens, MA, on his resignation on 31 August 2015.
Bishop Martyn said of his new appointment: “I count it an enormous privilege to have been nominated as the next Bishop of Leicester, but my feelings of excitement are mixed with sadness as I and my family face the prospect of leaving Gloucestershire. We are going to miss this beautiful part of the world and the people who have been so wonderfully kind and generous to us. I’ve learnt so much during my time here – not least because of the extraordinary circumstances of last year – but also because the churches of this diocese are so rich in their diversity and commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ. We truly give thanks to God for the privilege of serving here."
The Bishop of Gloucester, the Right Revd Rachel Treweek said:
"It has been announced this morning that Bishop Martyn is to be the next Bishop of Leicester. This is a wonderful appointment for Bishop Martyn, Leicester and the Church of England and yet I know that the news will be met by sadness here in this Diocese, and not least by me. I have actually known of this possibility since the day I arrived but as always there has had to be strict confidentiality around the appointment process.
"You don’t need me to tell you how much we will miss Bishop Martyn here, but our sadness at losing him will be mingled with a sense of joy and pride that we are sending him to lead another diocese.
"I have deeply appreciated Bishop Martyn's friendship, support and collegiality over the past 8 months since the day of my announcement. I also know how much this diocese has appreciated his leadership particularly over the past year when he took on oversight of the diocese earlier than he had expected. Whilst I am sad that Bishop Martyn will be leaving us so early on in my ministry here, I am convinced that today’s announcement marks a very natural and appropriate step for him. Bishop Martyn’s gifts and experience will be richly used in Leicester.
"Bishop Martyn is spending the day in Leicester visiting different parts of the Diocese. Do pray for him and Lynn, that in the midst of all the activity they will be able to enjoy the day and stay centred in the love and calling of God.
"It is likely that Bishop Martyn will be with us until the end of February 2016 and will begin in Leicester after Easter. There will be time for proper farewells in due course but for now we give thanks for his vocation and ministry, and we pray for him and the family as he contemplates the next exciting chapter in his journey with God."
Yours in Christ
