Gloucester Cathedral is one of the most important heritage destinations in the South West. A historic place of worship with origins that date back over 1,300 years, we remain open for everyone, 365 days a year and continue to hold services four times a day, every day. A sacred and holy place, a source of local pride and a site of rich history, the Cathedral remains an important focus for the City and County.
But the Cathedral isn’t a museum, it is a living, breathing building full of activity. We welcome over 400,000 visitors from all over the world and hold hundreds of events every year, ranging from skate parks and exhibitions, to Christmas markets and medieval days. We have also recently completed the first phase of a once-in-a-generation project to develop the site into a 21st Century Cathedral.
This is where you come in. As a member of our new Visitor Services Team you will be the public face of our Cathedral and it will be your role to ensure that every aspect of our visitor experience is going to delight everyone who comes through the door. As a charitable organisation that receives no state funding, we have to work hard to raise funds so that we can continue to care for the building and our heritage. Your role will play an essential part in this as you focus on combining a world class welcome with a confident ask for support of the Cathedral through a donation at the point of entry. When interacting with our visitors, you’ll inform them of the amazing work we are doing and what their money is funding.
We are not necessarily looking for candidates with lots of qualifications and experience. What we are looking for is people who are warm and friendly, have a positive and ‘can-do’ attitude, who have genuine enthusiasm for working with a variety of people and are happy to muck in and turn their hand to lots of different tasks. No one day at the Cathedral is ever the same. You might be welcoming a large group of overseas visitors one minute and helping someone who has come to the Cathedral for some quiet reflection and to light a candle the next. You could be setting up for an event in the morning and picking up litter outside of the Cathedral entrance at the end of the day. You will need to be able to show that you are a team player, have a flexible approach to tasks, have high standards of presentation, an eye for detail and are comfortable working towards targets. These positions will include some weekend and occasional evening work.
