Rise in heritage crime with easing of lockdown: Warning for churches

As the lockdown has been eased and with an increased amount of people moving about there has been a sharp increase in reported crime. Please stay vigilant. With the warmer weather and longer days metal theft, vandalism and other forms of criminal activity affecting churches and churchyards can increase.

Colleagues at the Church Buildings Council, monitoring the situation nationwide, report that during lockdown the types of crimes found at heritage sites have tended to be theft of gardening equipment and of electrical devices. There was also an increase in graffiti and illegal metal detecting.
