St John the Evangelist Church in Slimbridge has welcomed the arrival of a new art installation, especially for Christmas.
Local artist Jackie Lantelli created the angel sculpture to welcome visitors outside the church entrance during Advent and Christmas.
Jackie said, “Earlier this year, I was asked by the church if I could create an angel for Christmas time. As it was for Christmas, I took inspiration from images made of the angel Gabriel.
“Lots of people have come to look at the sculpture, to take photos and put them on social media. I saw a post on Facebook that said ‘The angel is very handsome, it must be Gabriel’. So I’m happy with the result.”
The sculpture took Jackie two months to make from different forms of new and recycled galvanised wire.
Pamela Storey, PCC Secretary, said, “It’s a spectacular figure and has attracted much interest. People from all over the worshipping community have been stopping by to take a closer look.”
This is the second work by Jackie to feature at the church. In 2018, Jackie captured the imagination of the country and created wire soldiers to mark the centenary anniversary of the World War One Armistice, featuring on BBC News.
While visiting the angel is free, any donations will be gratefully received and will be shared between the church repair building fund and the Gloucester City Mission Winter Appeal.
The angel sculpture will be at the church until the end of December before it goes into storage for next year.
