Trustee with legal expertise

Listening Post provides low cost, professional counselling to adults (18+) in Gloucestershire, regardless of financial status, gender, religion, ethnic background or sexual orientation.  The organisation also trains local people to become counsellors.  In the last two years the agency moved to offer counselling not only face to face, but also online and by phone.

Founded over thirty years ago, Listening Post conducted just under 5,000 counselling sessions in 2021, seeing almost 500 new clients.  It has over 80 voluntary and paid counsellors, a training team and a small team of paid staff.  Demand for our services continues to rise.

We are looking for a trustee with legal experience.  The Board has benefited significantly in the past from a trustee who was able to advise on employment and contract law.

Specifically, we hope you would offer:

  •  A relevant legal qualification.
  • Experience of providing legal support and advice within the private, public or charity sector.
  • An understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
  • Understanding of fundraising and charity legislation.
  • Understanding of data protection legislation and changing regulations.
  • The ability to work at a strategic level whilst understanding the detail and complexities of delivery.
  • The ability to analyse risks and opportunities and take a balanced approach to both.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and to network.
  • The ability to work as part of a team and willingness to take collective responsibility for the governance of the charity.
  • Long term commitment to Listening Post. There is a requirement under the charity’s Memorandum and Articles of Association that all trustees sign a Christian Statement of Faith.

 Time commitment and location

  • The Board meets every month, currently on a Monday evening.
  • Board meetings have traditionally been held in Gloucester, although currently the Board meets online.
  • Some work is devolved to sub-committees, which meet at a time convenient to their membership, usually online.

To apply

Please forward your CV and a covering email, stating why you are interested in the role, how your skills and experience would add value to the Board and any other relevant experience to the Chair of Trustees, Rosie Clifford ().  Informal enquiries are welcome via email to the same address.
