Leap of faith feast
February 29, 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
A fundraising event with delicious Syrian food, an exciting silent auction, live jazz and blues.
To raise money for ‘The Table’ at Christ Church – a vision for us all to rediscover the essence of true community in our city, part of which will be a give-as-you-can-restaurant.
This local initiative began with The World Cafe in 2014 with one family inviting neighbours for a meal. This venture quickly outgrew the family home, moving into Brunswick Baptist Church. Now, in its 5th year, the cafe regularly hosts over 100 people and provides English classes, kids summer clubs and family outings. All of which contribute to building friendships within our City, reducing alienation and exclusion; aiding mental and emotional wellbeing. There are chefs, artists, musicians and teachers giving their time and enthusiasm freely. This helps to ensure that the World Cafe serves Gloucester’s diverse community including local residents, refugees and asylum seekers.
The vision is for The Table at Christ Church to build on this success and also honour the heritage of the local parish community, which, for over a century has welcomed the homeless and the marginalised. Part of the plan is to include a ‘give-as-you-can’ restaurant. ln order for this to be a reality, the original Georgian church will need to be restored and made accessible to all. We live in a wasteful society where things are more important than friendships. Anxiety and loneliness are growing issues within all generations. Childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes are on the rise in our city. We propose to use surplus food from farms and supermarkets to promote healthy eating.
ln addition, music and art will play an important part in creating an inclusive space. People from all generations, cultures and backgrounds will be encouraged to come and share their wisdom and make friends. As well as a space for worship we want to create a community of justice and unity, welcome and hospitality; a place where people learn to love their neighbour and value themselves.
So, book your place and come and enjoy the Feast – there will be delicious Syrian food and live music. There is no charge for attending and we invite you to give as you can. We have been gifted several pieces of beautiful art, which will be available to purchase in a silent auction on the night.
