Mankind – Helping Male Victims of Domestic Abuse
March 4, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Helping Male Victims of Domestic Abuse
All domestic abuse is abhorrent and sadly, reported cases of domestic abuse have increased since the first Lockdown in March 2020. One in six men suffer domestic abuse in their lifetime and one in every three victims are male. Organisations and practitioners working with domestic abuse victims are realising there is a growing need to ensure men and their children receive the support they need in their local community.
The Mankind Initiative, based in Taunton, Somerset, is one of the leading charities in the UK focusing on male victims of domestic abuse. Mankind was the first charity in Great Britain to support male victims, having supported male victims since 2001. It is staffed by qualified professionals and a board which also consists of the UK’s leading academics and survivors.
Mankind’s activities are based on:
- Direct support to male victims through a National Helpline funded by donations (the charity receives over 2,000 calls per year, a rising number.)
- Support for organisations and practitioners who want better to recognise, support and understand male victims through specialist training.
- Giving male victims a voice by engaging with government, statutory agencies, politicians, academics and the national media.
The charity says: “Our aim is to ensure all male victims of domestic abuse (and their children) are supported to enable them to escape from the situation they are in. We are gender inclusive in our view so we want all female victims (and their children) to escape too.”
